Box Description
From colonial times to the present, Manifest Destiny reflects the history of American progress. As a player you nurture a mercantile empire from humble beginnings in Louisanna, Mexico, Pennsylvania, Quebec, or Virginia and expand it over time. You try to amass 30 victory points by purchasing Progressions, researching breakthroughs, and controlling cities.

You attempt to improve your holdings by using Progress cards, which reflect famous people, historical events, or product pay-outs, and the more powerful Destiny cards, only one of which may be played each turn. Your base cash each turn is reflected by your profit, which rises as you expand into new territories, and falls as you lose established ones. Cash is used to buy Progressions in five categories (Transportation, Telecommunications, Government, Culture, and Leisure) that provide you with additional powers during the game, as well as to buy tokens. Tokens are used both to expand territorial holdings as well as to buy Pioneers (which enable you to research unique Breakthroughs), cities, and additional cards.

Manifest Destiny makes American history come alive as a multi-player, interactive strategy game that is enjoyable for all members of the family, from 12 years old and up. You have the opportunity to both collaborate and compete over time in an ever changing world. If you respond best to these many opportunities, you will fulfill your Manifest Destiny.

More from GMT Games press release...

Manifest Destiny is a card-driven multi-player strategy game for 3 to 5 players set in North America from colonial times to the present. Designed as the successor to the Age of Renaissance, Manifest Destiny combines the strategic components of earlier, longer civilization-based games with the elegance of streamlined European gaming. While reminiscent of its predecessors in some respects, it is significantly simpler and quicker to play. Designed to appeal to a wide range of gamers, Manifest Destiny combines several unique elements that require strategic balancing to succeed.

Each player controls a mercantile empire as it expands into territories containing new markets across the continent. Players use cash to purchase Progressions and tokens. Progressions give players additional capabilities during the game. Tokens are used for territorial expansion and to purchase Pioneers, cities and additional cards.

Pioneers are used to explore Breakthroughs, which provide a unique ability to the first player to complete the Breakthrough (or to two collaborating players). Cities increase payouts and improve a territory's defense. The number of tokens available for purchase each turn is limited based on turn order.

As players gain or lose territories, their Profit, which is paid in cash each turn, increases or decreases accordingly. Each territory produces one or more products that result in payment as corresponding cards are played.

Each game is unique -- there is no standard path to victory. The game has several elements that keep all players competitive -- cards and Progressions are designed to assist lagging players. How you balance the competing opportunities will determine whether you achieve your destiny.
