Box Description They Shall Not Pass: The Battle of Verdun 1916 To Bleed France White In early 1916, German commander-in-chief Gen. Erich won Falkenhayn conceived one of the most horrific plans in military history. The German armies would attack the historic French fortress-city of Verdun in order to inflict as many casualties as possible on the defenders. That this would also mean the deaths of thousands of his own soldiers meant little; Falkenhayn aimed to trade life for life. 'II ne passaront pas,' swore the French commander of Verdun, Gen. Henri-Philippe Petain. 'They shall not pass!" For 10 months, the German and French armies engaged in a bloody struggle. When it ended, nearly half a million men lay dead but the French tricolor continued to wave over the shattered fortresses. The new game system has the clean play of the designer's masterpiece, Defiant Russia. Artillery bombardment and assault combat take place separately. Elite troops have numerous advantages, and morale is vital. Game pieces represent regiments and a handful of battalions. Units are rated for morale, attack, defense and movement.
